In the course of organizational development, when we transition from16 Thunder on Earth Yuto a state of ease and smoothness into17 Lake Thunder Sui, the core mission shifts toward 'dynamic following' and 'talent cohesion.' The philosophical foundation of the Sui hexagram lies instrength descending beneath gentleness: a leader with strong capability willingly lowers their status, placing themselves beneath those of talent and virtue.

Timing: The Art of Timing for Leaders

The hexagram text states 'The timing of following is truly profound,' meaning that following is not passive but an active discernment of opportunity. As it says,Image Comment: A lake contains thunderโ€”this is Following; thus, the noble person returns home at dusk to rest.. When the larger environment enters a phase of adjustment, leaders should act like gentlemen returning home at sunsetโ€”reining in their sharp edges and allowing the organization space to breathe. This parallelsthe relationship between Emperor Taizong and Wei Zhengin their interaction: Emperor Taizongโ€™s ability to 'follow' Wei Zhengโ€™s advice allowed him to adjust his governance rhythm.

Change in Position: Principled Transformation

The first line of the Sui hexagram says:When officials change, righteousness brings good fortune. Going out to meet others leads to achievement.. This shows that following is not blind obedience. When oneโ€™s official position (principles or stance) undergoes change, as long as one upholds righteousness ('following what is right'), and widely connects with like-minded talents (such asKing WenandJiang Ziyatheir meeting), one can achieve great accomplishments.

Historical Warning: The Counterexample of King Zhou of Shang
In contrast to King Wenโ€™s quest for talent isKing Zhou of Shangโ€™s method of constraining King Wen. King Zhou, though in a high position, failed to practice 'gentleness beneath strength,' even resorting to imprisonment (the Prison of Youli) to suppress talent. As the uppermost line of the Sui hexagram warns with 'Dark Indulgence'โ€”if one becomes trapped in foolish pleasure and fails to transform, they will ultimately lose the loyalty of all under heaven.
